We are excited to share that Vermont author and illustrator, Jason Chin will be visiting The Renaissance School after April break and hold multiple workshops for the students. Jason Chin has “created nonfiction books with an imaginative element.” He makes more complex environmental and scientific concepts accessible to young readers and brings these magical places to life through his beautiful and colorful illustrations. His books include: Gravity, Redwoods, Coral Reefs, and Island, A Story of the Galapagos.
Prior to his visit on April 29, the children in Kindergarten through Second Grades will have an opportunity to read his stories and complete an activity based on one of his books. The older classes, in addition to reading his books, will research the Rainforest in preparation for a workshop with him. Jason will spend time with the entire school during our morning assembly where he will share a slideshow presentation about his research process before writing his books. Following his presentation the Kindergarten through Second Grade students will learn about the character development as part of the writing process. The older classes will participate in two workshops. During the first session Jason will focus on story development. The children will use their research to pick an animal as the character, the setting, and basic plot points to create a story together. During their second workshop Jason will focus on illustration development. With the students’ help, Jason will create final illustrations for each image based on the story-board!
We are very excited about Jason Chin’s visit. If your child has a copy of any of his books at home, he would be happy to sign their book when he is at school visiting.
